The World Bank is ready to renew talks over Ukraine's AIDS project (ForUm, 19 May 2006)
http://en.for-ua.com/news/2006/05/19/155127.html A senior World Bank official said Thursday that the bank is ready for
talks to revive a $60 million project on combating HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis in
Ukraine that was suspended last month, Kyiv Post informed referring to AP.
"We are available to discuss how the recently suspended project may be
restructured and relaunched," said Paul Bermingham, World Bank Director
for Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova.
The bank suspended the grant after complaining that there had been little
progress in implementing the program, and only 2 percent of money had been
disbursed. Ukrainian officials have said they are determined to find a way
to restructure the project to get the project restarted.
Ukraine has one of the fastest growing HIV/AIDS epidemics in Europe.
Government officials say that 76,875 people have been registered as
HIV-positive since the first reported case in 1987. Some experts, however,
have suggested that as many as 500,000 people - 1 percent of Ukraine's
population - are infected.
